Put simply, dyslexia is a processing problem with language, affecting different kinds of language such as reading, writing, maths, music, speech; it affects different people in different ways. Dyslexia is much more common than most people think and affects as many as one in every eight people.
If identified early, most dyslexics quickly learn to cope well, are at no real disadvantage in life, and often find their dyslexia can become a positive asset in later years. At the Helen Arkell Dyslexia Centre they aim to support dyslexics through education, not just of the individuals, but by improving teaching professionals and those involved in education through a range of high impact dyslexia courses.
Because of the sheer numbers of students who suffer with dyslexia, supporting dyslexics in the classroom has become an increasing focus in UK education. At the Helen Arkell Dyslexia Centre they offer a range of dyslexia courses to enable teaching professionals at all levels to gain recognised qualifications, experience and understanding to help with dyslexia support.
The following annual courses offered conform to the QCA's principle for higher-level vocational qualification and the QCA Common Criteria, and are designed to provide a route for continuing professional development for professionals working with specific learning difficulties, such as dyslexia in literacy and numeracy.
· NOCN Level 3 course for Teaching Assistants is a choice of two courses for Key Stages 1, 2 and 3, or Key Stage 4
· OCR Certificate Level 5 in teaching learners with specific learning difficulties (dyslexia)
· OCR Diploma Level 7, generally for those who already hold a Level 5 Certificate and wish to progress to being qualified to assess and recommend education programmes for those with specific learning difficulties
